Is it time to re-tire?

Top Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Forklift Tires

1. Undercutting
If the tire rubber is pulling away or receding from the banding edge, it’s a clear sign of undercutting. This often looks like the tire is shrinking and is usually caused by overloading or making frequent sharp turns.

2. Chunking
Chunks of rubber missing from the tire? This "chunking" happens when tires encounter debris, rough surfaces, or hard impacts. It’s a common culprit behind rattling noises while the forklift is in motion.

3. Chipping
When the tire surface is covered in small cuts or missing pieces, that’s chipping. Typically caused by operating on broken concrete or floors cluttered with debris, it can compromise traction and safety.

4. Cracking
Cracks along the tire’s rubber face weaken its integrity and stability. Overloading or turning the forklift while stationary are frequent causes of this damage.

5. Out of Round
If the tire no longer maintains a perfectly round shape—especially at the band—it’s considered “out of round.” This usually results from striking objects that jut into the forklift’s path, causing dents or warping.

6. Tire Wear Diameter
A good rule of thumb to determine if tires need to be replaced is to see if the tire wear reaches just above the imprinted area with the brand name and the size of the tire. Many tire brands will also have a wear bar indicator.

The chart above provides general guidelines for the recommended tire replacement diameter due to wear. Keep in mind, these are approximate values—always refer to your specific tire brand, type, and tread pattern for exact specifications regarding outside diameter and width.
